Constraint
What made it hard
Driving a mechanical typewriter from underneath means moving real mass, fast and repeatably, on a machine built to be worked by a finger rather than a solenoid, without wrecking the mechanism it was built around.

Decision
What I chose, and what I rejected
I worked with the original mechanism rather than replacing it. Stripping out the typebars for something modern would have been easier and would have thrown away the only reason the object is interesting.
